Description:
This position is responsible for developing, writing, and editing material for reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, catalogs, and related technical and administrative publications. Position will be responsible to collect information from the research & development, design, manufacturing, and technical service departments. Must be able to prepare manuals and other materials dealing with the installation, operation, maintenance and/or repair products for customers, distributors, dealers and/or the company's own service personnel. After completion, manuals will be combined with other technical information and packed to ship with the equipment. This is an exempt position that may require in excess of a 40-hour week in order to effectively carry out the listed job duties. Some travel may be required. This position reports to the Manager of Technical Services.
PRIMARY DUTIES
1) Compiles, writes, edits, illustrates, and formats technical information to produce operation, maintenance, and parts manuals for all product lines.
2) Observes manufacturing activities to determine operating procedure and detail. Interviews production, service, and engineering personnel to become familiar with product technologies and production methods.
3) Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, parts lists, specifications, mock-ups, and product samples to integrate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and detail.
4) Reads journals, reports and other technical materials. Reviews OEM publications and trade catalogs, drawings and other data relative to safe operation, maintenance, and service of equipment. Incorporates above information as needed into written documentation.
5) Reviews materials and recommends revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of reproduction and binding. Maintains records and files of work and revisions.
6) Investigates, evaluates, and recommends competitive translation means and services, to prepare manuals for use in international markets.
7) Contributes to the companies core competencies of Market Intelligence and Product Development by gathering and reporting all relevant information. This includes: customer needs/wants/activities; and competitive information.
8) Visibly supports "lean" and other process improvement activities. Participates in rapid improvement events. Applies continuous improvement practices to one's job. Supports transition activities, as required. Maintains an open mind throughout the change process. Works with others to continuously fuel improvement throughout the Company.
9) Responsible for own safety. Practices only safe work habits and ensures all safety rules are followed. Responsible to keep area clean and organized to ensure safe working conditions
Qualifications:
An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in media production, communications, journalism, mechanical design, or equivalent experience or training in engineering, sales or technical service is required, plus five years technical writing experience. Mechanical aptitude with an extensive working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems, video equipment and photography essential. Position requires extensive technical writing background with good writing skills. Must understand and read mechanical drawings and electrical schematics. Must be proficient in related desktop publishing software such as PageMaker, InDesign, or Quark. Must have Safety shoes and safety glasses. Drug testing is required before first day.
